Combined a bit of business with pleasure so Tony, Jane and I detoured from on trip to Georgia and spent Sunday riding the Silver Comet Trail that runs between the Alabama State Line to Smyrna Ga, (near Atlanta). We elected to ride the section of trail from Rockmart GA toward Atlanta to the Silver Comet Depot near mile marker 4 on Floyd Rd.
Tony and I would ride SE while Jane would drive to the depot and ride towards us until we met. This was the first time on the trail for either of them so they were in for a treat. This trail is my favorite all time trail in the SE and I have a load of miles on it but always enjoy the ride.
As a Rails to Trails pathway the grades are mellow but can be very long as they both found out. I will post some ramblings on trail rides later but let’s just say the ride was fantastic for all of us. We suffered through a flat tire, and a severely bent derailleur hanger but the combination of the day, great friends and the trail made it so. It had been a long time since I had ridden the trail and there were some very noticeable improvements. Firstly, trail etiquette was exceptional in almost every case. Spandex clad streaks and mothers gently hustling their young along, all were courteous and kind. The trail is very family friendly with several new park spaces and one section with a very cool playground including an adult sized jungle gym.
We met-up with Jane near mile marker 14 and the three of us headed for the depot. Once at the depot we spent a few minutes looking around the bike shop there and refreshed ourselves from their stocks of goodies. It was a good day, a great trail and fantastic people to be with. If you are ever in the area, take the time to ride the trail and enjoy a trail that may also become your favorite.
